"Meet Sandy" and candidate forum set

There's a "Meet Sandy Hershelman" on Monday, July 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Tri-Area Community Center. It's a great chance for someone to get to know Sandy better.

Sandy fought hard to get a candidate forum together for the primary. It proved a challenge to get the incumbent to participate. The Leader came through: there's one at 7 p.m., Monday, July 28 at the TACC. All three District 2 candidates were invited.

Update: July 21....
The Leader explained the format:

"Thanks for agreeing to take part in the candidate forum sponsored by the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader, The League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women.

"The forum is set for 7 – 8:30 p.m. July 28 at the Tri-Area Community Center. The forum will be moderated by Leader Publisher Scott Wilson.

"The forum will feature the three candidates for Jefferson County Commissioner, Dist. 2: Democrat David Sullivan, Republican Richard Hild and Independent Sandy Hershelman.

"The format will be as follows:

• The moderator will welcome people to the forum and explain the guidelines. He will ask audience members to ask questions rather than giving a speech and will encourage everyone to engage in constructive, respectful dialog.

• Each candidate will make an opening statement of up to five minutes.

• The moderator invites questions from the audience. Questions can be directed to a single candidate, or all three. If a question is directed to a single candidate, the other candidates will be given the option of commenting.

• The moderator will direct the questioning so the candidates rotate in answering first, second or third. There is no time limit for answers, but candidates are advised to keep answers of a reasonable length so more issues can be addressed in the time we have available.

• At approximately 8:15, the moderator will end the questioning and candidates will be give an opportunity to present a closing statement of up to five minutes."
